You Don’t Have to Have your Ish Together— and It’s Totally Okay

Even Taylor Swift admits in her latest bop “Anti-Hero” that she doesn’t have her s#*t together; so why should anyone else?

My life is messy. Between being a wife, a daughter, a friend, a homeowner, a writer, an actor, a content strategist and balancing like, a full-time day job plus multiple side-hustles, I am not always so put together— and that’s okay!

Here’s how I make it work anyways, and why you shouldn’t expect yourself to always (or, ever) have your ish together in this mad, mad world.

I’m not always put together— and I’m not guilty about it, either

Was your laundry done, even if it’s lying in a heap on the floor? Are your kids fed, even if it was McDonalds? Is your workday complete, even if you cried a little just trying to answer all those emails, then immediately fell into a heap on the couch afterwards? If you answered “yes” to any of these things— congratulations! You’re a functional, amazing human doing their best and somehow making it all work, and that’s a triumph in and of itself.

I don’t always have my hair perfectly done and my house perfectly clean after a wild work day. Sometimes I prefer wine and reality TV to working out. After my mother-in-law died I had to learn to embrace eating what I was simply able to eat (thanks, grief manifesting as stomach issues!) and not sweat over making the perfectly healthy and balanced dinner every night. But guess what? I’m doing amazing, because I’m here; I’m trying; I’m showing up, and that’s what matters.

If you show up, give it your best (even if you need a village to help out, which we all do at times) and get through the day you should be proud. Life doesn’t have to be “perfect” to be great— and if you’re seeking nothing less than perfection, you’re going to be sorely disappointed, tbh.

Life is messy. Human beings are imperfect creatures, all just trying our best to navigate this messy, weird and wild existence— and even T. Swifty agrees. And that’s okay! Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others. Life is hard and it’s certainly a marathon, not a sprint.

Chill out— in the words of Kris Jenner, “you’re doing amazing, sweetie.”

Xoxo, MM.
