Do You Really Need to Define Your Aesthetic?
As someone with many varied, eclectic and niche interests (and who teeters from obsession to obsession on a whim), I’ve always found it difficult to define my “aesthetic.”
In recent years, the term “aesthetic” has been thrown around like a beach volleyball during spring break, defining everything from one’s personal style to one’s affinity for cottages, and beyond. Whether your aesthetic is cottage core, coastal grandmother, e-girl or retro chic, I’m posing the question, “Why define yourself at all?”
Why my “aesthetic” varies (and doesn’t define me)
I don’t like being pigeon-holed into one thing. Humans are far more varied, complex and interesting than any collection of terms could capture. I love high-fantasy novels and designer clothing. I love skulls and the color blush pink. I love minimalist homes and maximalist artwork. I love a lot of things! So, why would I define myself with one term, when I either can’t or simply don’t want to?
I argue that your aesthetic is more uniquely you than one word could ever describe— and that’s a great thing. Embrace it. Don’t worry about fitting into one area or another. You do you, friends.
